David Bates is currently the Librarian at NHS Islington. His first experience of Inmagic products was at the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1989. He subsequently introduced DB/Textworks to Lambeth Southwark and Lewisham Health Authority which he joined in 1991 using it not just for the Library but a range of other applications including records management, an internal telephone directory, and a database of general practices which was circulated to a range of local organisations on CD-ROM. After an 8 year break from libraries David returned to work as Librarian at the Multiple Sclerosis Society where he was responsible for the acquisition of Genie which he used to publish the world’s first database of full-text information for lay people with MS, obtaining permission from a range of organisations around the world to include PDFs of their publications and to deep-link to their websites. David joined NHS Islington in February 2009 where he has been using Genie to streamline the work of the Library.
